About the Foundation

A small beginning, offered wholeheartedly

The Maitreya Buddha Foundation is how the teaching moves beyond the individual and into the world.

Our mission

Basics for every life, values in every act

We exist to help ensure that every human being has the basics of a dignified life: food, water, shelter, education, clothing, love, and teachings that alleviate suffering.

We are guided by the Five Human Values: Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love, and Nonviolence. They shape not only what we do, but how we do it: honestly, accountably, calmly, lovingly, and without harm.

Where we are

Honest about a small start

Among our work today is helping families in Nepal rebuild homes lost to flash floods, in partnership with a local team. Anything we have not yet begun, we describe as vision.

We will only ever describe work we are actually doing. Trust is not claimed. It is earned.

A schoolgirl looks up from her notebook, listening closely
Every child deserves the chance to learn.
A woman in a sari offers a plate of rice and curry to an elderly woman
Every elder deserves to be fed and honoured.
How we work

Guiding principles

Inherent dignity

Every human being carries a wholeness that no poverty or loss can diminish. Service is not charity extended downward, but recognition offered across.

Radical inclusion

The basics of life belong to every human being, regardless of race, religion, nationality, gender, age, or belief.

Community-led work

The people closest to a need understand it best. We resource local teams rather than arriving with outside solutions.

Truthfulness

As we grow, we intend to share clearly where support goes and what it accomplishes.

Inner and outer

The separation between inner work and outer service is the very illusion we are here to dissolve.

Love as practice

Love is not a sentiment. It is shown in consistency, patient partnership, and the willingness to be changed by what we meet.

Founder

Maitreya

The Foundation was founded by Maitreya, an awakening and liberation teacher based in Vancouver, British Columbia. For over two decades she has guided seekers toward the recognition that freedom is already present.

The Foundation carries that teaching into practical service: the conviction that a person who is housed, fed, and cared for has room to discover who they truly are.

Governance

A board now forming

The Foundation’s board is now forming. We welcome people of integrity with experience in international development, finance, law, or contemplative practice. Positions are voluntary.

Our family of initiatives

Part of Uncommon Wisdom

The Foundation is the humanitarian arm of a wider body of work that includes Maitreya’s teachings at MaitreyaBuddha.com, Maitreya Counselling, and the Uncommon Wisdom Coaching Institute. Each has its own purpose. The Foundation’s purpose is service.

Nepal flood housing

Help a family come home

Families in Nepal lost their homes to flash floods. Our local team is helping them rebuild. Every contribution, of any size, brings a family closer to a safe place to live.
