Our vision for the planet

Liberation from suffering begins with the basics.

We hold a vision of a world where every human being has water, food, shelter, clothing, education, love, and the teachings that end suffering. Not as charity, but as the birthright of every life.

This page describes our long-term vision. Among the work underway today is rebuilding homes in Nepal.

Why the basics

Two kinds of suffering

Every wisdom tradition speaks of suffering. Most of the world’s aid speaks of need. We believe they are two faces of one thing, and that both can end.

An elderly woman sits outside a makeshift shelter of wood, tin and plastic sheeting

The suffering of the body

An elder sitting outside a shelter of tin and plastic, hoping tonight’s rain stays away. A child too hungry to think at school. A family drinking water they know may make them sick.

This suffering cannot wait for philosophy. Before anything else, people need to be safe, fed, and warm.

An elderly man sits alone in a dim room, gazing out of a window

The suffering of the heart

Then there is the pain no one sees. The widower who sits by the window all afternoon because no one is coming. The mother carrying her grief alone. The quiet belief, in so many of us, that we are small, separate, and unseen.

This suffering lives in every country and every home. It is what the teachings exist to heal.

“When we give a family shelter, we offer more than a place to sleep. We give them the safety to dream, the dignity to live, and the space to discover a freedom that no suffering can take away.”

Seven basics, one path

From survival to liberation

The seven basics form a path. It begins with what keeps a body alive and rises toward what sets a spirit free. Each step makes the next one possible.

A young girl drinks clean water from her cupped hands beneath a flowing pipe
01

Water

Clean water, close to home.

What it ends
A girl walking for hours each morning with a heavy jar instead of going to school. Children falling sick from the very water meant to keep them alive.
What it makes possible
Healthy children, and time given back: hours for learning, for play, and for rest.

Expresses Nonviolence Vision

A woman in a sari offers a plate of rice and curry to an elderly woman
02

Food

Enough to eat, every day.

What it ends
A mother quietly skipping meals so her children can eat. The ache of going to sleep hungry, and the fear of what tomorrow will bring.
What it makes possible
Strength to work and to learn, and the simple joy of sharing a meal with the people you love.

Expresses Right Conduct Vision

A mother and two children wearing marigold garlands stand in front of their newly finished home
03

Shelter

A safe home to return to.

What it ends
Nights spent under plastic sheeting, listening to the rain. Families scattered, with nowhere to call their own.
What it makes possible
A door that closes. A dry place for children to sleep. A family together under one roof, able to rest at last.

Expresses Peace Where we have begun: Nepal

A woman in a red shawl holds a thick warm blanket inside her home
04

Clothing

Warmth and dignity.

What it ends
Children shivering through mountain winters. The quiet shame of a torn shirt on the first day of school.
What it makes possible
Warm nights, healthy bodies, and the confidence to walk into the world with your head held high.

Expresses Right Conduct Vision

A schoolgirl looks up from her notebook, listening closely
05

Education

The chance to learn.

What it ends
A bright child kept at home because there is no school nearby, no uniform, or no money for books. A future decided by circumstance rather than by choice.
What it makes possible
A young person who can read, question, and dream, and who can shape their own life and lift their family with them.

Expresses Truth Vision

A smiling mother in a red shawl holds her laughing young child close
06

Love

To be seen and cared for.

What it ends
The elder who no longer has visitors. The child who has never been told they matter. Loneliness, which can hurt as deeply as hunger.
What it makes possible
Belonging: knowing your life matters, that someone would notice if you were gone, that you are held.

Expresses Love Vision

An elderly monk laughs with a young boy as they sit together beside a green field
07

Teachings

Wisdom that eases the heart.

What it ends
Fear, grief, and restlessness that no amount of comfort can quiet, and the painful belief that we are alone and separate.
What it makes possible
A peace that does not depend on circumstances, and the discovery that the freedom we long for was here all along.

Concentric circles: one family at the centre, then one village, many communities, and the whole planet One family One village Many communities The whole planet Nepal, now
How it grows

From one home to the whole planet

A movement to end suffering does not begin with the whole planet. It begins with one family, in one place, done well. Then a village. Then many communities, each led by people who know their own land.

We are at the centre of this circle now, in Nepal. We will widen it only as fast as trust, resources, and the right partnerships allow.

  1. Now

    See Nepal through

Give our full attention to the families in Nepal and to supporting our partners there in rebuilding homes.

  2. In time

    Grow partnerships carefully

Build relationships with trustworthy, community-rooted organisations, one at a time, wherever the need is real.

  3. One day

    Open access to the teaching

Offer scholarships and free access so that financial circumstance never decides who can receive teachings that ease suffering.

  4. One day

    Community centres

Places offering food, learning, contemplative teaching, and healing support in regions of greatest need.

  5. Always

    Partnership over programme

We do not arrive with answers. We arrive with resources and the willingness to listen.

  6. Always

    Measure what matters

Not only homes rebuilt, but the dignity kept in every interaction and the love actually present in the work.

This is what every gift is working toward: a family, safe at home.
Where the vision touches the ground

It starts with one roof

Every vision is only as real as the first thing it actually does.

Ours is a home for a family in Nepal who lost theirs to the floods. Help us complete this first circle well, and the rest will follow.

Every act of genuine care is a teaching.Maitreya
